Chapter Twelve

His freshly laundered clothes smelt a lot better than when he did them himself, and it felt highly extravagant to have had the hotel clean them. He might have got to enjoy the sensation a little longer if Zal hadn’t persuaded him to stay in bed, which was how he’d spent his Sunday. There had been a lot of sleeping, but there’d also been several rounds of enthusiastic sex. He’d needed the extra downtime, and it hadn’t taken much to convince him not to leave.

Now it was Monday, and he had to go to the office first thing to mop up any overspill from dealing with Fichis, which meant he would need to go in wearing his sweats. He could hear the tongues wagging already.

Still, it couldn’t be helped, and he would pop back to his flat, collect clothes for the rest of the week, and then he’d carry out his somewhat reckless promise to take Zal shopping that afternoon. Although by no means his favourite pastime, it might be fun seeing Zal’s reaction to a few different places and hoped he didn’t have the same appetite for buying things as he did for sex.

Zal cracked open an eye. “You aren’t going are you?”

“I meant to go yesterday but a certain naughty Chroalian stopped me by sucking my good sense out through my cock.”

Zal sniggered. “I did try to give you some back in return, but I’m not sure cock-to-arse is an efficient administration route for such a procedure.”

“I’m not sure how they’d measure the outcome in the clinical trial.”

“I think we should volunteer as test subjects. Starting straightway for the sake of science.”

He stole a quick kiss but didn’t let Zal pull him back into bed. It was tempting, but he needed to get to the office and talk to Trev. “I have to go; I’ll send you a text when I’m on my way back. Just don’t get into trouble.”

“Who, me?” Zal’s smile might have looked innocent but Devlin had seen and experienced enough of Zal not to be fooled. “Don’t worry, I’m going with my dad to a museum about transport. He loves things with wheels.”

“I can’t say I have his enthusiasm, but if you’re going to Covent Garden, you should also spend some time watching the street performers.”

“Thanks for the tip. I’m saving my mum from having to go. I think she actually prefers the idea of an all-day meeting with your Earth Ministers.”

“She’ll change her mind after the first couple of hours with Horace Tyme. He’s affable enough, in a damp tea towel sort of way. I’m always amazed that he keeps his job.”

“Because he has people like you doing the real work.”

“Flattery will get you everywhere, but not until later.” He dodged Zal’s attempt to grab him. “I’ll see you in a bit.”

Marjorie took one look at him as he walked through the office and smirked. “Did you get attacked?”

“I don’t know what you mean.” He sat at a spare desk with a communal laptop since his own was still at his flat.
